We feel priveliged to be in a position to give back something to this community around Lake Atitlan which has given so much to us. The Iguana Perdida is more than just a place to stay, it is a center for community projects aimed at helping this area which has so many basic needs. Here are some of the things we’re up to.
The Iguana is active with Amigos de Santa Cruz, a non-governmental organization dedicated to helping education health and economic development of Santa Cruz La Laguna and neighboring villages. Volunteer opportunities are available, just come on in to the Iguana and ask for Deedle.More info
Panajachel Colegio Internacional is a non-profit, bilingual secondary school for kids who aim to go on to universities around the world.
This is the big one for us. Three hurricanes in 12 years, lack of proper sewage-treatment plants and garbage disposal around the lake, deforestation, and a multitude of other problems mean that we’re constantly working on environmental issues.
Saturday Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning the Iguana is proud to host a farmer’s market from 10am until 1pm. Vendors sell everything from fresh-baked bread and pastries to fruits and vegetables, natural remedies, honey and preserves and even artisan’s crafts from around the lake area. This is a great chance to socialize on a lazy Saturday morning and get to know some of the local community.
